India's war on Spam ...

Goodbye Truecaller! Jio, Airtel, and Vi introduce built-in Caller ID to fight spam calls

Indian telecom operators Jio, Airtel, and Vi are rolling out a built-in caller ID feature to combat spam calls. This feature, called Calling Name Presentation (CNAP), will display the caller's name, making it easier to identify unknown callers. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) mandated this feature to reduce customer harassment from spam callers.

The CNAP feature will use data from customer application forms (CAF) to display the caller's name. However, it won't be available for 2G and feature phone users due to technological limitations. Initially, the rollout will be limited to same-network calls, meaning that if you're a Jio user, you'll only see the caller's name if they're also using Jio.

How CNAP Works

- Caller ID Database: A centralized database stores names associated with phone numbers.

- Call Setup: When a call is initiated, the system queries the database to retrieve the caller's name.

- Name Display: The caller's name is displayed on the recipient's screen.

The implementation of CNAP is a significant step towards reducing spam calls in India. With over 7,90,000 complaints registered against unregistered telemarketers in the first half of 2024, TRAI's efforts to combat spam calls are crucial
