Maha Shivratri 2022: Do's and Don'ts for this auspicious day

This year Maha Shivratri will be celebrated on March 1.

The festival is popular among the devotees of Lord Shiva.

It is believed that the day marks the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

On this day, devotees of Lord Shiva observe fast and perform puja and Rudraabhishek.

Here are some of the dos and don'ts you should keep in mind while performing the Maha Shivratri fast:

Do's while performing the fast:

1. Wake up early morning (preferably during Brahma Muhurat - two hours before sunrise) and clean the house for the Maha Shivratri Puja later on the day.

2. Do Dhyana (meditation)

3. Take bah early morning and wear clean and bright clothes for fast rituals.

4. In order to seek Lord Shiva's blessing for long life, one should offer Durva grass which is said to have 'Amrit' to Shivling.

5. Maintain celibacy as soon as you observe the fast.

6. Use sandalwood instead of turmeric and Kumkum.

7. Follow a day-long fast with full dedication. Consume fruits, milk, and recipes with vrat-specific ingredients.

Don'ts while performing the fast:

1. Devotees should not consume meat, tobacco, and alcohol.

2. Do not offer Kumkum, turmeric (haldi), and coconut water to Shiva Ling or idol.

3. Avoid using Ketaki and Campa flowers.

4. Avoid black-colored clothes.

5. Do not offer Tulsi leaves to Lord Shiva.

6. Do not do a full parikrama on Shiva Linga.
