The Queen’s Gambit Episode 5: Beth Adjusts to Her New Lonely Life and Wins US State Chess Championship

Like previous episodes, viewers are given a glimpse of a younger Beth with her biological mother.

She is advising Beth that she should never be afraid of being alone in the world.

In present same situation has arisen for Beth after the death of Alma.

She returns to an empty silent home where everything is reminding her of Alma.

Interestingly an old face makes a comeback in Beth’s life.

Harry Beltik (Harry Melling), one of the winners Beth has beaten in one of her first tournaments returns in her life.

She calls Beth to inform her that he is in town for some time and would like to advise on her chess playing strategy after her recent loss with Borgov.

Beth agrees to the proposal. After meeting him she realizes he has changed a lot.

He advises Beth to control her anger as that is the only problem keeping her back.

He also gives her a reality check and tell her to improve her games a lot more if she wants to meet Borgov.

Beth also invites Harry to move in with her instead of the hotel.

They eventually hook up but harry seems a little nervous around Beth.

He also notices her addiction habits. Later he leaves telling Beth that he had taught her all he knows.

An Old Foe Becomes a Friend

The story moves a bit and Beth is attending US state chess championship in Ohio. She has to play Benny Watts in one of her final matches.

Benny who is champion at speed chess traps Beth in playing speed chess with him a day before match.

Beth being Beth accepts the bet.

She loses every time to Benny and had to pay 5 dollars after each match.

Fuming at her loss she returns to her room. In the final match however, Beth is able to defeat Benny in just 30 moves and wins the US championship title.

Afterward Benny and Beth are at the bar discussing the match.

He notices her unusually alarming drinking habit and asks her to tone down a little.

He also invites her to New York to train her for her upcoming match with Borgov at Moscow Chess open but makes a condition that they will not hook up.
