Latest News: Modi Government bans 25 OTT platforms in India because of the widespread content including pornography online, ALT Balaji takes the spotlight

On July 25, 2025, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) ordered the blocking of 25 over-the-top (OTT) apps and related websites due to their repeated circulation of content labeled as sexually explicit, vulgar, or obscene. The decision was made under various Indian laws addressing the broadcast of inappropriate material and the protection of women and children from indecent exposure online.

Some of the banned platforms include Ullu, ALTT (ALT Balaji), Big Shots, Desiflix, NeonX VIP, MoodX, Gulab App, and Boomex, among others. These apps had allegedly defied previous warnings from authorities, continuing to stream content without adhering to the IT Rules 2021, which require responsible self-regulation and ethical publishing standards.

The government cited sections from the Information Technology Act, 2000, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, Indian Penal Code, and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986 to justify its actions. It stated that these platforms were operating without proper age restrictions or content disclaimers and promoted material lacking artistic or social value.

Before the ban, the MIB had issued advisories in September 2024 and February 2025, urging platforms to comply. However, some apps, like Ullu, reportedly uploaded previously removed shows such as House Arrest, triggering further scrutiny.

The action was taken in consultation with multiple government departments, including Home Affairs, Women and Child Development, and IT, as well as industry stakeholders and legal experts.

While the move has been supported by some, including the National Commission for Women, others in the media industry have raised concerns about the need for clearer OTT regulation and artistic freedom.

This follows a similar move in March 2024, when 18 OTT platforms were also banned for hosting similar content.
