UGC’s Equality Committees Face Supreme Court Scrutiny Over Alleged Bias Against General Category Students

The Supreme Court is hearing a public interest litigation challenging the UGC's new anti-discrimination rules, alleging that they discriminate against general category students.

Protests are raging across the country city like New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh Madhya Pradesh with several local community like Karni Sena and students union were against this.

The rules mandate the formation of equality committees in higher educational institutions.The Supreme Court was hearing a public interest litigation challenging the UGC's new anti-discrimination rules, alleging that these rules discriminate against general category students and that they are facing nationwide protests.

The court agreed to an immediate hearing and stated that it is aware of the status of the case. Under the new rules, it has been mandated to form equality committees in all higher educational institutions, requiring representation of OBC, SC, ST, women, and persons with disabilities.

Critics allege that the new rules lack clear provisions and raise the possibility of misuse. During the hearing, the Supreme Court commented that the new rules are clearer. The court issued a notice to the central government and stayed its new rules. The next hearing on this matter will be held on March 19.

The challenge to the UGC's new rules is ongoing. The hearing on the petition was held in the Supreme Court by a bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Jio Malia.

Vishnu Shankar Jain, appearing for Delhi on behalf of the Yatras, said that this is creating conscience in the society. He challenged section 3c of the rule. Vishnu Jain said that section 3c of this notification has been defined as caste-based discrimination against SC, ST, OBC.

In this, members of the general category have been completely excluded.These 3cs affect Article 14 and the definition given in one of them is completely discriminatory.
